Ryuonji Temple, Saitama

Beauty and tranquillity within a perfect setting

Some of the structures within the complex are older than others. Many of the old monuments predate the larger wooden structures which have been rebuilt several times throughout this temple's history

Several meters away from Tatsugaya Bridge (たつがや橋), you will find this partially covered gate marking one of the many entrances to this temple

The moss covered stone paths will soon take you up to the main two story pagoda called Muaitemon (無相門)

Interestingly, although Ryuonji is referred to as a temple, I came across this ‘torii’; a gate which is usually found in shrines. Even more interesting is the fact that there is a small shrine set within this temple complex. This clearly emphasizes the fact that historically in Japan, Shintoism and Buddhism have been very closely interlinked with each other

Saving the best for last! Located towards the back of Ryuonji is this brightly decorated building known as Kyouzou (経蔵). Although not visible to the public, the inside of this building holds many important religious artifacts including a Buddhist Sutra

Although not as famous as the temple complex of Nikko in Tochigi prefecture, the quality of these carvings is in no way inferior. In 1983 Ryuonji was officially designated a site of cultural importance by the Saitama Prefectural Government

Located in rural Ogose City, Saitama, Ryuonji Temple is the ideal place to find some peace and tranquility. Set deep within a beautiful forest, this temple boasts several impressive structures including a large two story pagoda and a bright red colored gate.

Originally built in around 1429 by a local Shogun, Ryuonji had to be completely re-built by ‘Ooda Dokan’ in 1472 following a devastating fire, a fate which has plagued Ryuonji throughout its history.

Fortunately, this great temple has been painstakingly restored to its former glory, allowing you to enjoy its great aesthetic and natural beautify.
