The Biwako Canal flows from Otsu to Kyoto and was built in 1890 with a beautiful brick-made bridge, Suiro-kaku in the precincts in Nanzen-ji Temple. The water supplied from Biwako Lake is used in Kyoto for city water, irrigation, electrical power plant, as well as for transport a century ago. Now you can enjoy a pleasant walk from Keage Subway Station to Nanzen-ji Temple along the waterway of this canal. Nejirimanbo tunnel is just under the slope railway “incline” and Suiro-kaku Bridge is an impressive brick structure in Nanzen-ji Temple.
