While driving through rice paddies in the countryside in Ibaraki, I noticed many small purple signs that said (in Japanese), 'Flower Hill Hanazono'. We followed the signs and were amazed to find a large, beautifully tended English garden and tea room. Walking around the garden is free, but visitors should take some time to relax on the shop's balcony to enjoy some tea made from herbs grown on the property and a homemade piece of cake. The garden is open from late March to November, and is closed on Wednesdays.
Ibaraki's Flower Hill Hanazono
A lovely flower & herb garden in Kasama

On a weekend in Japan's busy Golden Week holiday, we had the garden to ourselves.

This is the sign to look for when searching for the garden. It is hidden off the main road up a hill down a small countryside lane.

You will be transported to another time and place as you wander through this beautifully kept garden.

Keep your eyes open for small 'touches' like this little rabbit.

The garden slopes gently downward, and small mountains make a lovely backdrop.

This is the tea room/cafe. Inside there is also an shop area full of flower-covered souvenirs, homemade jams, teas, and more.

There are tables inside, but this is where you want to sit.

Enjoy delicious herb tea and a dessert - Western or Japanese, while looking out over the garden.

The menu is only in Japanese, but limited to only a handful of items - a variety of herb teas, juice, coffee, desserts, and a single light 'lunch of the day'.

The flowers change with the season and are really lovely. The garden is a nice stop after shopping for pottery in central Kasama, but is only accessible by car.
