On Tanegashima, the island often called Japan's "gateway to space," art and science come together in a unique cultural celebration. The Tanegashima Space Art Festival transforms Minamitane Town into a stage for large-scale artworks, performances, and immersive experiences inspired by the mysteries of the universe.

Launched as a community-led initiative, the festival takes place in collaboration with the nearby JAXA Tanegashima Space Center, one of Japan's most important rocket launch sites. By combining cutting-edge space exploration with creative expression, the event invites visitors to see space not only as science, but also as inspiration for culture and imagination. Its guiding spirit, "Love the Unknown," captures this sense of curiosity.

Exhibitions are spread across several venues, including Uchuugaoka Park, the main hub of the festival, where outdoor installations and performances take place under the night sky. The JAXA Space Center also opens its grounds for large-scale works and special exhibits inside its museum, while Chikura Cave becomes the site of an immersive "Star Cave" planetarium experience.

Each edition brings together artists from Japan and abroad to present new installations, stage projects, and interactive programs. Past highlights have included dramatic light sculptures, sound-and-space performances, and workshops connecting visitors with the natural beauty of Tanegashima.

With its mix of contemporary art, local culture, and the awe of space exploration, the Tanegashima Space Art Festival has become a signature event for the island. Visitors can expect both inspiration and discovery in a setting where the sea, sky, and cosmos meet.
