The Asian Games will return to Japan for the third time in 2026, this time in Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya City. Held every four years, the Games are Asia’s largest multi-sport event, involving 45 countries and regions and organized by the Olympic Council of Asia. Beyond the competition itself, the Games serve as a platform for international exchange, cultural connection, and the celebration of diversity across the continent.

The history of the Asian Games goes back to 1951, when India’s first Prime Minister called for a way to rebuild regional unity through sports following World War II. The first Games in New Delhi featured 11 countries including Japan, and since then the event has steadily grown in both size and importance. Japan last hosted the Games in 1994 in Hiroshima and before that in 1958 in Tokyo, and with the upcoming event in Nagoya, the country is once again positioned to play a central role in promoting sports diplomacy in the region.

One of the unique aspects of the Asian Games is its combination of Olympic and regional sports. While global disciplines like athletics and swimming are a major part of the schedule, the event also features sports popular in Asia such as kabaddi, sepak takraw, and cricket. This mix reflects the cultural richness of the continent and gives spectators a chance to experience competitions that don’t often receive international attention.

Keep an eye on the official website for more information about ticketing as the event draws closer.
