Okazaki Yoimairi 2024

Winter is a special time in Okazaki as the city gears up to celebrate the birthday of its most famous historical figure, Tokugawa Ieyasu. The main highlight, Okazaki Yoimairi, is a large-scale illumination event held at key landmarks tied to Ieyasu's legacy: Okazaki Park, the birthplace of Ieyasu and home to Okazaki Castle, and along Jomon-dori to Shooji Temple, where his father, Matsudaira Hirotada, is laid to rest.

The main event runs from Saturday, December 7th, to Sunday, December 22nd, 2024, with special extended illuminations at Okazaki Park continuing nightly until Monday, January 13th, 2025. The festivities officially kick off with the lighting ceremony in front of the Otemon Gate at Okazaki Park from 4.45pm on the 7th.

The illuminations at the venues will run from 5pm until 8pm (lights stay on until 9pm at Okazaki Park), with several unique experiences to elevate your evening. Illuminated traditional umbrellas are available to rent as you explore the grounds, or you can purchase a glowing lantern (prices not yet announced) as a memorable keepsake from your visit. There is also a free digital stamp rally, where participants can enter a lottery for the chance to win meal vouchers—it's a great way to enjoy some of the city's culinary offerings.

For those who appreciate Insta-worthy snaps, there will be a bamboo lantern photo spot at Okazaki Park which looks picture-perfect.

While there is no fee to enjoy the lights, bring yen if you plan to rent an umbrella or purchase a lantern.
